The Port of Piraeus is to start work on a €120 million cruise port extension project, which will enable it to become the main cruise centre for the Mediterranean region.

Designed to capitalise on the 151 per cent increase in cruise traffic at the port between 2002 and 2012, the project will involve the extension of the southern part of the cruise port and the construction of an international passenger terminal.

The 140,000 sqm development will have a 1,000 m internal quay wall with 18 m depth, as well as 1,100 m breakwaters, allowing it to cater for cruise vessels of more than 300 m in length.

All necessary approvals have now been received and the project is expected to take 23 months to complete. It will be largely financed by the European Structural Funds body, which will provide 95 per cent of the total budget.
