Marine Group Boat Works is to carry out a US$22 million repair and refurbishment project on two commuter ferries operating in the San Francisco Bay area of California, US.

The company, located in the Port of San Diego’s member city Chula Vista, successfully secured a contract to fully refurbish the 97 ft Bay Breeze owned by the Water Emergency Transportation Authority. It will also renovate the 180 ft San Francisco owned by the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District.

“We’re privileged to be in a port city that has good weather year-round, existing infrastructure and an extensive marine services and supplies network to be able to compete with other port cities nationwide,” said Todd Roberts, vice president of Marine Group Boat Works. “Any opportunity to promote San Diego’s maritime fleet support capabilities is invaluable not only to us, but the Working Waterfront community overall.”

Bay Breeze will be fitted with a new conventional propeller system, a series of other interior and systems upgrades, among other refurbishments and a refreshed paint scheme. San Francisco, which was built in San Diego and delivered in 1977, will receive updated machinery, replacements and upgrades to electrical and auxiliary systems, as well as a renovated interior.

Creating 50 new jobs for the South Bay, the two projects will be completed by Marine Group Boat Works’ team of in-house tradesmen, including ABS-certified welders, shipfitters, pipefitters, mechanics and painters.
