Cruise & Ferry Review - Autumn/Winter 2023

COVER STORY Selected suppliers share how their products and solutions will enhance the operational efficiency and guest experience onboard Royal Caribbean International’s first Icon-class ship Outfitting an Icon Lighting up a landmark vessel GDS Pioneering has provided a selection of lighting products from its Harmony and Reality ranges for various venues onboard Icon of the Seas. The team collaborated with the ship’s designers to tailor and enhance existing product ranges to meet the specific requirements of venues such as the highly immersive Absolute Zero Ice Arena, the majestic Royal Promenade and Royal Theater. “The luminaires are revered globally for their beautiful rendering, vivid colours and unrivalled dimming,” says Alan Colquhoun, head of sales at GDS. “The result merges high-quality white light with stunning colour to provide a world-class customer experience throughout.” Iconic illuminations Building on its close relationship with Royal Caribbean Group, Chelsom is playing a key role in helping the brand to create lighting solutions for Icon of the Seas. The firm was selected to create a broad range of decorative lighting pieces for many areas of the ship, such as the cabins, suites, public areas and a fine dining restaurant. Chelsom is working directly with the shipyard, local outfitters and electrical contractors to deliver the striking lighting for the ship. Enhancing entertainment with advanced lighting technology The jazz bar on Icon of the Seas will feature ArcSystem Navis 100 luminaires and the F-Drive centralised driver system from theatre lighting and control systems manufacturer ETC. The Navis RGBW luminaires were selected because of their unique colour-mixing technology and compact size. Meanwhile, the F-Drive LED driving system means that the power supplies will be accessible from a maintenance room instead of the tight ceiling space. F-Drive was also the solution of choice because of its thirdparty fixture compatibility, with hot swappable output cards catering to both constant current and constant voltage applications. In addition to Navis and F-Drive, Icon of the Seas is equipped with ETC Irideon WLZ, Source Four Mini, and D22 LED luminaires, along with BluesSystem running lights and Hog 4 lighting controls. 50
