Cruise and Ferry Interiors 2019

CFI CURATED Art appeal ysa.no “Many cruise lines try to attract younger adults, which requires changes in design and art to create an ambience that also speaks to these guests. The duo Broslo is inspired by fashion, publicity, reuse and street art, creating fun objects filled with energy, embracing humour with an underlying criticism of our consumer society. Everything and anybody may be made fun of. The refreshing out-of-the-box expression engages younger adults (of all ages),” said Trond Sigurdsen, senior architect, partner and chairman at YSA Design. “The centrepiece of the Sea Cloud Lounge on Sea Cloud is the fireplace, mantle and the carving above it – it is the most valuable work of art on the ship. American socialite and owner of General Foods Marjorie Merriweather Post purchased the mantle as a whole in England during the 1920s, and it was incorporated into the main salon on our ship Sea Cloud with additional carvings in the same classical Roman-era ‘egg and dart’ motif, which is continued around the room (and echoed overhead in Sea Cloud II’s Lounge). Elsewhere in the room, guests can see wood carving done in the style of the 17th Century English carver Grinling Gibbons. Although we can’t confirm if our fireplace is a real Gibbons carving, it certainly bears his trademark signature: a peapod. Peapods in Gibbons’ work were said to be portrayed as bursting open when his commission had been paid, but closed otherwise – the ones on our ship are certainly open!” said Daniel Schäfer, managing director of Sea Cloud Cruises.
