3 Welcome to the 2019 issue of Cruise & Ferry Interiors, which boasts a fresh new look as it steps out from the shadow of the mighty International Cruise & Ferry Review! It’s almost 45 years since Joe Farcus, our Design Legend (see page 138), broke the mould with his Carnival Cruise Line ship design in the 1970s. We’re much closer now to fairly valuing the designers’ role – their work inspires passengers to lose themselves in their vacation, transported from everyday toil to fantastical immersive experiences. But how often do we consider how interiors make us feel? Design psychology is not a new concept and the architects of our vacation experiences are masters of this science. In the most successful passenger ship interiors, the seven pillars (unity, balance, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, scale and detail) of exceptional design collaborate to deliver the precisely prescribed vacation mood to captivate passengers. There are countless examples throughout this issue. Holland America Group’s My Nguyen is one of many to give a perspective on the emotional connection that guests make through good design in our Personally Invested feature on page 42. Studio DADO focuses on how to provoke sensory responses in our cover story on page 38, while Christian Schönrock explores how Costa Group creates onboard magic in our keynote on page 10. Ferry operators are also setting themes for their own emotional stories – Andrew Sheen says Irish Ferries draws on its national heritage in our Interior View on W.B. Yeats on page 69, while Per-Ola Jonnerheim says Stena Line prioritises sustainability in his Design Perspective on page 82. We hope that this issue contributes to your greater appreciation of passenger ship interiors when you’re on your next adventure at sea!
