Cruise & Ferry Itinerary Planning 2027

PLANNER PERSPECTIVE Designing itineraries for unpredictable rivers Chris Townson of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises tells Rebecca Gibson how the brand is designing flexible, destination-led cruises while evolving its business model for changing waterways S.S. La Venezia acts as a floating boutique hotel in the Venetian Lagoon, giving guests easy access to the Italian city Record-breaking heatwaves and prolonged drought pushed major European rivers – including the Danube, Rhine and Loire – to historically low levels in summer 2026, disrupting river cruise operations across the continent. For example, when low water on the upper Danube prevented Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ newest ship S.S. Emilie from reaching Regensburg and Nuremberg, the team was forced to rapidly rework the itinerary. “We kept as many of the original experiences as possible and added new ones, including a day in Salzburg with dinner on the Mönchsberg,” says Chris Townson, managing director of UK, Europe and South Africa at Uniworld. “Guests were impressed by how quickly the team swung into action.” This agility stems from Uniworld’s decades of experience navigating the unique operational challenges of luxury river cruising in Europe, says Townson. “Rivers are living things, and that’s part of their magic, but it means we’re working with nature rather than against it,” he explains. “Low water in late summer is the most visible challenge, but high water in spring, lock closures and maintenance, and congestion at popular berths all need managing too. We can’t control the weather, so we focus on what we can control: preparation, flexibility and communication.” Nautical and operations teams monitor water levels and forecasts continuously throughout the season, creating contingency plans for each itinerary well before ships set sail. Uniworld also factors risk into longer-term planning. “Our programme spans waterways that behave very differently – the Venetian Lagoon, the tidal rivers around Bordeaux, the managed Douro, the Rhine and Danube,” explains Townson. “Our growing range of ‘Cruise & Tour’ itineraries and land-stay combinations Photo: Uniworld Boutique River Cruises 56
