Cruise & Ferry Itinerary Planning 2027

45 can balance commercial growth with community expectations and long-term destination stewardship, says Di Palma. “Community concerns should be listened to respectfully and solutions must be developed locally through dialogue among authorities, ports, tourism organisations, businesses, residents and the cruise industry,” he says. “Every destination is unique, with different priorities and expectations, so there is no one-size-fitsall approach. However, the objective should always be to create meaningful local value through shore experiences, transport, hospitality and participation by local businesses. Tourism that is socially accepted, environmentally responsible and economically valuable benefits residents, visitors and local businesses alike.” The fact that cruise itineraries are developed years in advance makes it easier for ports to prepare the wider destination for calls, says Di Palma. “Destinations have the opportunity to coordinate vessel schedules, prepare local services and manage visitor flows more effectively,” he explains. “Explora Journeys works closely with port authorities to do this and, where appropriate, stagger arrival times to optimise port operations and support a positive experience for both guests and local communities.” Technology is also helping ports and cruise lines to improve operational efficiency and the guest experience. “Today, data and analytics enable operators to identify inefficiencies and intervene earlier,” says Di Palma. “There’s also potential to make greater use of data and destination management tools to support visitor flow management locally and enhance the overall visitor experience. AI, advanced analytics and better data integration could also improve demand forecasting, berth allocation, passenger flows, ground transport and energy use.” Looking ahead, Di Palma suggests ports that invest in long-term planning and build strong partnerships with cruise lines and destination stakeholders will be better positioned to meet the sector’s changing demands. “Ports and destinations that can successfully bring infrastructure, reliable services and a great guest experience together are best placed to succeed over the long term.” Greenland is one of the many destinations Explora Journeys visits around the world “ The strongest ports engage early with cruise lines and take a long-term approach to planning” Photo: Explora Journeys
