Cruise & Ferry Review - Spring/Summer 2026

Auckland gets first plug-in hybrid fast ferry New Zealand Transport has taken delivery of Auckland’s first plug-in hybrid fast ferry, which was designed by Incat Crowther and constructed by Q-West Boat Builders. The vessel will be operated by Fullers360 on the Auckland-toDevonport commuter route. It is expected to reduce carbon emissions produced by Auckland Transport’s fleet by 750,000 kilograms per year. The vessel has a liquid cooling system with pumps and heat exchangers for electric motors, converters, inverters and switchboards. It reached a speed of 36 knots on all-electric mode during its sea trials. The ferry accommodates 299 passengers and 20 bicycles and has been designed to provide passengers with a comfortable and highly reliable service. There is a range of seating options onboard, including tables with USB ports, as well as fold-up luggage compartments and floor-to-ceiling windows. “This new vessel will offer Aucklanders a world-class, low-emission travel experience,” said Dan Mace, Incat Crowther’s technical manager. The Umeå-Vaasa route became the first international green shipping corridor after Wasaline signed a biogas contract with Gasum and a Fuel European Union Maritime pooling agreement with Stena Line in 2025. “Now entirely new opportunities open up for Wasaline as we become part of a larger group,” said Peter Ståhlberg, managing director of Wasaline.
