Cruise & Ferry Review - Autumn/Winter 2026

As in any commuter transport operation, local traffic concentrates in the morning and evening peaks, between 06:00 and 09:00 and again from 16:00 to 18:00, while tourist demand is more evenly spread during the day. “Both commuting passengers and tourists share the same fundamental need: safety,” says Supapan. “Commuting passengers need speed of travel and low fares, while tourists prioritise a relaxing panoramic view experience over cruising speed.” This dual role shapes the fleet and service pattern, with Chao Phraya Express Boat operating under coloured flags that indicate stopping patterns, distances and fares. The coloured-flag services partly overlap but serve different start and end points. Further route development remains possible, Supapan says, but “increasing service frequency must be aligned with passenger density and demand”. Operationally, it is closer to urban transit than a conventional ferry route. Integration with Bangkok’s wider transport system also matters because Chao Phraya Express Boat functions as a feeder network for passengers travelling from the northern and western outskirts towards the city centre. “Most passengers travel from the outskirts into the city,” says Supapan, explaining that many use the boats to connect with other transport systems. The government is working towards a common ticketing system that Chao Phraya Express Boat expects to join, but passengers can currently pay by cash, Rabbit card or QR code. 79 Some of the earliest cross-river ferries run by Khunying Boonpan Chao Phraya Express Boat’s services take commuters and tourists past Bangkok’s iconic landmarks like Buddhist temple Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)
