171 into a strategic platform that facilitates dialogue, knowledge sharing, research, training and sustainability initiatives, while fostering cooperation between ports, cruise lines, destinations, policymakers and industry partners. Our role today is not only to promote growth, but also to ensure that growth delivers long-term benefits for communities, destinations, passengers and the environment.” Since launching in Rome, Italy, with 16 members, MedCruise has become the world’s largest cruise port association. It now represents more than 170 ports and destinations across 22 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe and is supported by an extensive network of associate members and industry partners. Members include major homeports, boutique destinations, island communities, historic cities and emerging cruise regions. Riga regards this diversity as the association’s greatest strength. “Every member brings different experiences, challenges, perspectives and expertise,” she explains. “Some ports are leaders in infrastructure development, others in sustainability, destination management, innovation, cultural tourism or operational excellence. By sharing these experiences, members gain direct access to knowledge and opportunities that would be difficult to obtain individually.” This collective expertise has enabled MedCruise to become a “trusted voice” for the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas. The association provides market intelligence, produces industry studies, and develops and promotes best practices for the cruise sector. Its work covers a wide range of topics including decarbonisation, shore power implementation, alternative fuels, environmental protection, digitalisation, community engagement and destination and visitor flow management. “We’re helping members understand how different destinations are addressing challenges and identifying opportunities for cooperation,” says Riga. MedCruise also organises biannual General Assemblies and specialised events, “One of our greatest achievements is bringing together stakeholders who may not otherwise have the opportunity to collaborate directly” Photos: MedCruise
