Cruise & Ferry Review - Autumn/Winter 2026

164 FEATURE Aruba Aruba is strengthening its position as a leading Caribbean cruise destination through modern, efficient port facilities in Oranjestad, expanded sustainable tourism initiatives, and deeper collaboration with local operators to deliver more authentic shore experiences. Investments in smooth passenger processing and destination management reduce pressure on operators while supporting authentic, low-impact shore experiences – such as snorkelling, sailing and island tours. These efforts directly appeal to cruise lines seeking sustainable partners by ensuring guests can enjoy safe, seamless and responsible visits, while reinforcing Aruba’s reputation for reliable, forward-looking tourism infrastructure. Port Everglades, USA Connecting cruise ships to electrical current is a top priority for Port Everglades. As the world’s third-largest homeport, Port Everglades is committed to advancing initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including the installation of shore power infrastructure at its eight cruise terminals. The port’s plans call for a phased installation at a cost of approximately $21.5 million per terminal, with construction anticipated to start in spring 2028. Once fully implemented, the shore power initiative is projected to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking 2,470 cars off the road annually. British Virgin Islands The British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA), through its management of the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, is committed to advancing environmental sustainability while delivering an exceptional visitor experience. As part of its longterm strategic vision, BVIPA is investing more than $1.5 million in sustainability initiatives at the Pier Park, including the installation of a photovoltaic system to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. It has also implemented a recycling programme throughout the facility. These investments demonstrate BVIPA’s commitment to creating a cleaner, greener and more resilient cruise destination. They also support the sustainability goals of the authority’s cruise partners while strengthening the British Virgin Islands’ position as a responsible, forward-thinking and environmentally conscious destination for the global cruise industry.
