Yet sound is often overlooked as a design tool, according to Q-SYS, an integrated audio, video and control provider. Here are five ways designers can maximise the use of sound to create the optimal guest experience onboard passenger ships. 1. T he right background music played at the right listening level can enhance and even define an interior space. For example, an elegant dining experience can be elevated with appropriate background music, but if the volume is too loud, it can easily disrupt guests and ruin the ambience the designer worked to create. 2. The star of the show on any cruise is the ocean. The sound of the sea can be piped into interior spaces where there are no windows or access to natural outdoor sound to reinforce guests’ connection with the ocean. 3. S ound accounts for at least 50 per cent of any live onboard entertainment experience. Whether it’s a musical, DJ or theatrical performance, a sound reinforcement system that has been professionally designed and installed using high-quality components creates a memorable experience that leaves a lasting impression. 4. Sound technology does not need to be an eyesore. Loudspeakers – typically the only visible part of a sound system – come in all shapes and sizes, which means they can be hidden or painted to blend with any decor scheme. 5. High-quality sound conveys a high-quality experience. A sound system that delivers pure, undistorted, natural sound complements the care that was taken to define a complete, aesthetically pleasing environment. Mark Mayfield is director of vertical marketing solutions at Q-SYS, a division of QSC European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and Interferry are to develop a joint programme to promote an environmentally sustainable future for the European ferry business through the provision and use of onshore power supply (OPS). Together, ESPO and Interferry aim to drive the effective deployment and use of OPS in the ferry industry, persuade maritime organisations to fund OPS installations, and encourage the promotion of new fuels and technologies, amongst other initiatives. ESPO and Interferry to join forces on sustainable priorities Interferry will encourage the use of OPS at its 46th annual conference on 1-5 October 2022
