2 4 MARKETWATCH Why planning is vital during ship refits The prefabricated superstructure model Viewpoint: Tina Kjeldgaard Viewpoint: Jussi Laimi The team at Danish Decoration still gets impressed with how much it is possible to achieve in such a short time, despite having been in the business for so many years. A complete refinish of the entire ship can be completed in just a few weeks. You do not see this kind of turnaround in other businesses. It is all a matter of planning and being in control of the logistics to make it happen. Once you have that, it’s amazing how project teams and workers from all over the world are able to stay onboard together with the ship’s crew, working every day in good spirits to complete project after project. Tina Kjeldgaard is project manager for Danish Decoration An increasing number of marine and offshore yards and owners are turning to the full prefabrication of vessel superstructures at a remote location prior to delivery to the yard to increase efficiency in newbuild projects. This is because, to put it simply, the more of a particular project that is turnkey, the more projects a yard can handle simultaneously with less internal resources, costs and risks. The prefabricated superstructure model enables the shipyard to scale up capacity quickly, which is especially important in times of uncertainty. For a company like Almaco, projects like these are everyday work and often easier than traditional turnkey projects, where schedule constraints are out of our hands and depend on other stakeholders. Centralising the responsibility of the accommodation areas to one single party, all the way from design and engineering to construction, makes it easier to control costs, schedules and the overall project. Jussi Laimi is vice president of sales for newbuild accommodation at Almaco Hera’s mirror control system for staterooms is integrated into the mirror’s surface, allowing guests to choose their desired colour, appearance and brightness.
