The Port of Turku, City of Turku, Tallink Silja and Viking Line are to jointly develop a new passenger terminal and multi-storey car park to improve passenger and cargo operations at the port in Turku, Finland.
According to the joint letter of intent, the car park will have capacity for 689 cars and will be open by 2020, while the joint terminal and nearby quay will be completed at the start of 2025. The terminal will be managed by the Port of Turku and the shipping companies will pay to use it. City of Turku will be responsible for reconfiguring the roads to and from the port.
The letter of intent also outlines plans to carry out developments in areas in Kanavaniemi, and improve traffic arrangements in the western part of the inner harbour.
“The port and its surrounding area will become more attractive,” said the Port of Turku in a press release. “The fascinating district around the river Aura will become accessible to both locals and visitors all the way to the port. Cruise guests will be able to stroll along the riverbanks to the city centre and enjoy the numerous sights along the picturesque route including the medieval Turku castle and the maritime centre Forum Marinum. It will have a great impact on the future of Turku and strengthen Turku’s image as an active, international and vital city.”
