Havyard Design & Solutions is to deliver design services and an extensive equipment package for four new eco-friendly cruise ferries, which will be operated by Havila Kystruten in Norway from January 2021.
The newbuilds have been ordered as part of Havila’s new contract with Norway’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, which will see it providing services on Norway’s coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes. Initially, the contract will last for a period of 10 years.
Havyard has designed the four vessels using advanced simulation models to create 125-metre-long vessels with optimised hulls and engines that will run on LNG fuel and battery power, allowing them to exceed the Norwegian Government’s regulatory requirements. The company has already finalised the steel drawing for the 700-passenger vessels, so steel-cutting processes can begin before the end of 2018.
Both Havyard Group companies and other Norwegian equipment suppliers will deliver equipment for the newbuilds.
“The close collaboration between the customer and the companies in the maritime cluster has enabled a design and equipment package to be put together that really delivers on the qualities the customer was looking for,” said Arve Helsem Leine, design manager at Havyard.
Havila Kystruten has contracted Spain’s Astillero Hijos de J. Barreras shipyard to build two of the cruise ferries and Turkey’s Tersan yard to construct the remaining two.
“I am delighted to announce that the last obstacles to the building contracts have now been removed, thereby securing delivery in the third and fourth quarter of 2020,” said Arild Myrvoll, CEO of Havila Kystruten.
