Copenhagen Malmo Port (CMP) and ferry operator DFDS will establish a shore power facility in Copenhagen, Denmark. The joint project will allow DFDS vessels to be connected to shore power from next year.
The shore power facility will reduce emissions of air contaminants such as nitrogen and sulphur oxides and particulate matter.
“For CMP, this is a very important milestone in our sustainability work,” said Barbara Agersnap, CEO of CMP. “Together with DFDS, we have found a solution which will result in the emissions in central Copenhagen caused by ferries docking at the quay to be significantly decreased.”
DFDS’s scheduled ferry services make daily calls at the port, with a ship sailing between the two capitals of Copenhagen and Oslo, Norway.
“We are very pleased that it will now be possible to connect the vessels to a shore power facility in Copenhagen for the benefit of our neighbours in the city and the climate,” said Torben Carlsen, CEO of DFDS. “We look forward to working with CMP and the City of Copenhagen so that we can secure the ferry service between the two capitals in the future.”
The work on the design and planning of the facility is now underway, with construction expected to begin in 2020.
