Washington State Ferries (WSF) has become the first US ferry operator to join Green Marine, a voluntary environmental certification programme for the North American maritime industry.
WSF has enrolled its 22 vessels, 19 terminals and a maintenance facility in the Green Marine sustainability initiative in an effort to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment. The ferry company will use Green Marine’s performance indicators to address key environmental issues, such as greenhouse gases, air emissions, oily water, waste management, underwater noise, environmental leadership and community impacts.
“We are pleased to join Green Marine and look forward to working with its framework and team as part of our constant efforts to green our fleet and facilities,” said Kevin Bartoy, WSF’s environmental programme manager.
Green Marine’s programme will help WSF to exceed regulatory compliance requirements and foster a culture of continual improvement.
“WSF’s participation is a truly welcomed addition to Green Marine,” said David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director. “WSF is a sustainability leader when it comes to marine mammal protection and electric hybridisation, for example, and there’s no doubt that WSF’s participation will help Green Marine to achieve its objective of advancing environmental excellence within the North American marine industry.”
