Wärtsilä is to supply six 31DF dual-fuel engines, a fuel gas supply system and advanced navigation equipment for Ponant’s new luxury ice-class polar cruise ship, which will debut in 2021.

Currently under construction at the Vard Søviknes yard in Norway, the 150-metre-long vessel will be equipped with four 14-cylinder and two 10-cylinder Wärtsilä 31DF engines, as well as Wärtsilä’s fuel gas supply system, so she can primarily operate on LNG fuel. This will enable Ponant to save fuel, reduce its environmental impact and comply with strict emissions regulations in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

Wärtsilä will also provide its Nacos Platinum advanced navigation equipment, which can later be integrated with a proactive energy management system from its subsidiary Eniram.

“We have ordered the building of a clean ship featuring technologies that go beyond current industry-standard environmental regulations,” said Charles Gravatte, Ponant’s general secretary. “This is why we have chosen a propulsion format with Wärtsilä’s highly efficient 31DF engine running on LNG.”

The equipment will help to minimise the newbuild's impact on the environment.

“Wärtsilä’s cutting-edge technologies are making a huge contribution to creating cleaner, more efficient, and more environmentally sustainable shipping,” said Glenn Mattas, regional sales director for South Europe and Africa at Wärtsilä Marine Solutions. “This valuable contract is a clear example of this. We are delighted to be supporting Ponant in enabling this cruise ship to meet the highest standards of sustainability.”
