Australian company TT-Line relaunched Spirit of Tasmania I after an extensive refurbishment on 5 August.

Completed by UK-based turnkey contractor Trimline, Tasmanian sub-contractors and TT-Line staff, the refurbishment included a complete refresh of internal décor, lighting and colour schemes throughout the ship.

In addition, Trimline and the other contractors added a new self-service restaurant named Tasmanian Market Kitchen; a ‘grab and go’ shop named The Pantry; three bars showcasing Tasmanian wines, ciders and beers; and an upgraded tourist information hub to assist passengers planning their holiday.

The ferry also features a fully refurbished lounge with recliners that are equipped with individual reading lights, tray table, and USB port; upgraded Deluxe Cabins; updated soft furnishings in all cabins; and astroturf flooring, deck chairs and lounges on the upper decks. New entertainment options include an arcade-style teen zone and kids play area, two cinemas and 28 new flat-screen TVs.

“It was a complicated task given that some of the works were required while maintaining the overnight sailing schedule,” said Mike Grainger, chairman of TT-Line. “But the works were well planned and well executed. We are also very pleased that 20 Tasmanian-based contractors and their 200 employees were commissioned by Trimline to work on the project as this provided an important economic boost to the state and to the north-west coast where the bulk of the work was undertaken.”

Trimline and the Tasmania-based contractors are also set to complete a refit onboard Spirit of Tasmania II by the end of August. The work is being completed while the ship is in operation on the Bass Strait and in port.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the “new” Spirit of Tasmania I in Devonport today (5 August), Mr Grainger said passenger numbers increased in 2014/15 compared to the previous financial year and forward bookings in 2015/16 were already very positive.
