Telenor Maritime and SES have rolled out new global VSAT services and a mobile broadband platform onboard all of Silversea Cruises’ ships.

The new high-speed internet platform was rolled out across eight vessels in just one month at the end of 2016. Guests and crew are now able to stream video via sites like Netflix and YouTube, contact family and friends using audio and conferencing apps, and use social media sites such as Facebook.

“We were surprised by the ability of our partners to deploy a fully functional solution in just one month, at the end of the year, across a fleet of eight vessels spread all over the world, some of them at very remote destinations,” said Fabio Agostini, CIO of Silversea Cruises. “The internet onboard is amazingly fast and consistent throughout the fleet. We are replacing all antennas with brand new ones, entirely redundant, and this is just the beginning of a new generation of services that we will implement in the short to medium term.”

Frode Støldal, CEO of Telenor Maritime, said: “We met its requirements through innovation in technology and way of working. SES with its global concept as sole airtime provider across the globe, combined with our mobile background and ability to optimising services end to end over satellite links, proved immensely successful.”
