Spain’s port of Tarragona has ended the 2017 cruise season after welcoming a record-breaking 51,390 cruise passengers – an increase of 284% compared to 2016.
In 2017, 37 ships made a stopover in Tarragona compared with 22 in 2016. Over 51,000 passengers generated €3.9 million for the region.
There was also an increase in passengers between the ages of 35 and 54, with this group accounting for 42% of the total passenger numbers.
Passenger feedback was positive, with over 90% saying that Tarragona met or exceeded their expectations and 89% saying they would recommend the destination.
Forecasts for 2018 show that 55 cruise ships and 80,000 passengers will call at the port – an increase of 49% and 56% from 2017, respectively.
This increase is partly due to Costa Cruises deciding to replace the 1,727-passenger Costa neoRiviera with the larger 2,395-guest Costa Victoria.
