Red Funnel Isle of Wight Ferries’ Red Osprey ferry has returned to service following a major £2.2 million interior refurbishment.

The vessel now mirrors her sister ship, Red Falcon, which was refitted in March 2014.

“We are delighted to have undertaken further significant investment work, following very positive feedback from customers who have travelled on Red Falcon,” said Kevin George, chief executive of Red Funnel. “The company carried record numbers in 2014 as more customers than ever chose Red Funnel over its rivals. The refurbishment of Red Osprey further underpins our commitment to providing the best possible travel experience for cross-Solent travellers as we work with partners and stakeholders to help grow the Isle of Wight’s economy.”

UK-based marine interior refit company Trimline completed the project in eight weeks, adding a new sun deck; modern table and seating; additional charging points for mobile devices; LED lighting to reduce energy consumption; and two passenger lounges, one designated as pet friendly.

In addition, the ship features new elevator access from the main car decks to the passenger areas and at wheelchair-friendly promenade deck, while each lounge features a large touchscreen with games, an image library and an interactive Isle of Wight map in each passenger lounge. An additional 35 LED screens have also been installed to enable the guests to see the vessel’s position, find out more about local points of interest and real-time travel information for road, rail, air, and coach services. There is also live television in the bar area on B deck and in other areas of the ship for special events.

Meanwhile, the onboard menus have been updated to include more local produce, while the wifi connection has been improved.

Customers can also amend or make Red Funnel ferry and accommodation bookings by using the Ship Stores while sailing onboard Red Osprey and Red Falcon. They will also be able to purchase various attraction, event and festival tickets, seek tourism advice from specially trained staff, and purchase Isle of Wight and Red Funnel-branded merchandise.
