Meyer Turku laid the keel for TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 6 at its Turku shipyard in Finland on 24 April.

During the ceremony, coins were placed under the keel block to bring good luck to the ship, her passengers and crew. The ceremony was attended by representatives from TUI Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Meyer Turku and classification society Det Norske Veritas.

Set to debut in 2017, the 2,534-passenger Mein Schiff 6 is the fourth cruise ship Meyer Turku has constructed for TUI Cruises. The vessel will be around 294m, have 15 decks and approximately 1,267 staterooms, 90% of which are on the outside and 82% of which will have a balcony.

Mein Schiff 6 will feature an exhaust cleaning system that comprises a catalytic converter and a scrubber to reduce sulphur emissions by around 99% and nitrogen oxide emissions by around 75%.

“After many months of planning and pre-production we are starting a very exciting period in the building of Mein Schiff 6,” said Jan Meyer, Meyer Turku’s CEO. “It will now only take seven months until the ship is fully assembled from its grand blocks. This period in which the ship takes shape is then followed by further outfitting, commissioning and testing works.”
