MAN PrimeServ is to retrofit a total of 30 turbochargers onboard four of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd’s (RCCL) cruise ships.

As part of the contract, Man PrimeServ will equip Royal Caribbean International’s Grandeur of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas with 16 TCA55 turbochargers each. Meanwhile Horizon and Zenith, which both sail for RCCL’s subsidiary brand Pullmantur, will each be retrofitted with four NA40/S and ten NA34/S turbochargers.

Man PrimeServ will also provide attachment kits and technical support.

“This turbocharger upgrade will not only boost engine performance, but also extend engine life and support the entire operation both from a technical and cost perspective,” said Wayne Jones, senior vice president and head of MAN PrimeServ Diesel. “In the end it’s an investment in sustainability.”

The first retrofit will take place onboard Enchantment of the Seas in December 2015 during her regular itineraries between Florida, US, and the Bahamas. Each installation is expected to take around ten days per engine.

“Our ships are the best and most innovative in the world, thus we are always eager to explore new solutions to increase their performance,” said Gregory Purdy, senior vice president of Marine Operations at Royal Caribbean International. “We put high expectations in this turbocharger upgrade.”
