German shipyard MV Werften has contracted KONE to provide elevators and escalators for the two Global Class cruise ships it is building for Star Cruises.

KONE will deliver 9 KONE MonoSpace elevators, 33 KONE MiniSpace elevators and 16 KONE TravelMaster 110 escalators, as well as E-Link monitoring systems. The elevators will have boarding, luggage handling, gangway and medical priority operating modes.

“With years of experience in marine business, KONE’s team has convinced us with their experienced site professionals and planning and design expertise,” said Jarmo Laakso, managing director of MV Werften. “We’re looking forward to building the world’s most modern and efficient cruise vessels with improved passenger flow and boarding.”

Each of Star Cruises’ 204,000gt Global Class cruise ships will be able to 5,000 passengers and more than 2,000 crew members and will be delivered by MV Werften in 2020 and 2021. KONE’s contract also includes options for two similar vessels.

“The Asian cruise market is booming and there is a new breed of cruisers with high expectations for onboard experience,” said Timo Pakarinen, managing director for KONE’s marine business. “With early involvement, we’re proud to have co-created with the customer a tailor-made solution that meets the needs of Asian cruise passengers.”

MV Werften has also contracted KONE to deliver two MiniSpace passenger elevators and two MiniSpace service elevators for each of Crystal Yacht Expedition Cruises’ two new Endeavor class mega yachts, which will debut in 2019. The agreement also includes an option for one additional ship.
