Holland America Line has celebrated its 145th anniversary, marking its place in history as one of the most experienced cruise lines in the world.

First founded as shipping and passenger line Netherlands-American Steamship Company on 18 April 1873, the cruise line was renamed Holland America Line and offered its first vacation-only cruise in 1895. It was purchased by Carnival Corporation in 1989 and currently operates 14 ships that sail to more than 400 ports on all seven continents. Throughout its history, Holland America Line has carried more than 16 million passengers to vacation destinations across the world.

“Holland America Line proudly honours the rich and rare legacy of our past while exceeding the expectations of today’s traveller with the very best experience at sea,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line. “Throughout the history of the company, our purpose has remained the same, to bring to life the dreams of those who sail with us, discovering new places, cultures and people along the journey. We look forward to the next 145 years.”

In December 2018, Holland America Line will expand the fleet further when it welcomes the second 3,218-guest Pinnacle Class ship, Nieuw Statendam. The 99,500gt ship is currently under construction at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Marghera, Italy. A third Pinnacle Class ship will set sail for the cruise line in 2021.
