Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ 880-guest ship Boudicca is to undergo engine repairs when she arrives in Tenerife in Spain on 27 January after an onboard fire.

The fire broke out in Boudicca’s engine room at around 4am on 25 January as the ship was sailing from Cadiz, Spain, as part of her 18-night Cape Verde & the Canaries cruise.

The ship’s master confirmed that the fire was contained in the engine room, which meant that there was no need for passengers to wear their lifejackets and gather at muster stations. None of the 784 guests and 356 crew members sustained injuries and all onboard services resumed as normal.

“The well being of all guests onboard Boudicca is Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ utmost priority,” said the cruise line in a written statement. “Fred. Olsen would like to thank all its customers for their wishes of support and is delighted to report future bookings were unaffected yesterday demonstrating the loyalty of its guests, with one, currently onboard Boudicca, actually booking their next holiday for March 2016.”

Boudicca will remain in Tenerife for two days while the ship’s two main engines and electrical cables are repaired.

Guests will then be notified of a revised itinerary for their cruise. Mike Rodwell, the line’s managing director, and a team from the head office in Suffolk, will fly out to Tenerife to welcome and speak to guests on their arrival.
