Disney Cruise Line is to nearly double the size of its current fleet by ordering a seventh ship for its family-friendly brand at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.
Set to be delivered in 2022, the seventh ship follows Disney’s 2016 order for two newbuilds, which will be delivered by Meyer Werft in 2021 and 2023.
Although the names, design plans and itineraries for all three vessels are still being developed, each one is expected to offer its ‘own unique experiences’. All three will be powered by LNG and are expected to be slightly larger than the newest Disney Cruise Line ships – Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy – which debuted in 2011 and 2012. Each newbuild will weigh around 135,000gt and offer 1,259 guest staterooms.
“We decided two ships wouldn’t be enough to hold all of the exciting new experiences we have been dreaming up to take family cruise vacations to a whole new level with immersive Disney storytelling, world-class family entertainment, and imaginative innovations that are fantastically fun and uniquely Disney,” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “By the time all three new ships are sailing, we’ll have nearly doubled the size of our existing fleet.”
According to Disney, its new ships will lead the way in the next generation of innovative cruise experiences designed especially for families, transforming the ‘art of cruising’ and taking guests on adventures in ‘a way never dreamed of before’.
