Workers, engineers and VIP guests cheered as Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku delivered to Mein Schiff 5 to TUI Cruises in June, ten days ahead of schedule.

Finnish marine interior designer and supplier NIT was one of the turnkey suppliers that helped to build the new ship. NIT, which has previously designed interiors for Mein Schiff 3 and Mein Schiff 4, delivered five interior areas for Mein Schiff 5. Totalling 5,500sqm, these areas included bars, restaurants and a shore excursion area for the passengers, as well as stairways, a library and a lounge room for the crew. The company also provided turnkey interior outfitting services, installing an HVAC system, piping, electrical systems and insulation.

The 295m vessel, which weighs 99,800gt, has 13 restaurants and bistros, 13 bars and lounges and much more. She can accommodate up to 1,000 crew members and 2,794 passengers.

“I am very happy with the drive and commitment shown by our in-house teams and our subcontractors,” says Torsten Viljamaa, project manager at NIT. “Our procurement and design professionals worked smoothly with the production team. There was some pressure during the project but we were able to use it as a source of energy. One of the highlights was the unusually positive feedback we received concerning the quality of the wood grain imitation.”

All of the work was completed on time according to the quality standards of Meyer Turku’s inspectors.

“Mein Schiff 5 was an extremely inspiring project for our team, because the sushi bar was to be in a different location to where it is on the sister ship, Mein Schiff 4,” says Jari Suominen, CEO of NIT. “We had to adjust the plans for areas, which were already the toughest part of our work. We succeeded in this and finished the project 100% ready. The good cooperation with the Turku shipyard made it possible.”

Earlier this year, Meyer Turku contracted NIT to design and build five public areas onboard both TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 7 and Mein Schiff 8.

“We are looking forward to new challenges positively with the shipyard. Our productivity is increasing and we do all that can be humanly done to keep to our schedules,” Suominen says. “We will continue working with Mein Schiff and TUI Cruises until at least 2018, and I believe that there will be many more great projects to come. We have prepared for the future growth of Meyer Turku and we will continue to do so – by recruiting new talent and investing in research and development and the sustainability of our operations.”
