Shipping companies team up to advocate the use of scrubbers ahead of IMO's January 2020 sulphur cap

Carnival Corporation has become the first cruise company to join the newly formed Clean Shipping Alliance 2020 (CSA 2020), which will advocate the use of shipboard exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) to reduce the industry’s environmental impact.
Carnival Corporation, which has already installed scrubbers on more than 60 ships across its brands and plans to deploy them on over 85 vessels by 2020, is working with 17 other companies from the commercial shipping sector. They include: Blystad Group, Cargill, DHT Holdings, Eagle Bulk Shipping, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Frontline, Golden Ocean Group, Grimaldi Group, Hunter Group, Navig8 Group, Okeanis Eco Tankers, Oldendorff Carriers, Safe Bulkers, Spliethoff, Star Bulk Carriers Corp, Torm and Trafigura.
CSA 2020 will provide research data about the environmental benefits of open- and closed-loop scrubbers to industry players, national and international authorities, non-governmental organisations and the public. It will also support the implementation and effective enforcement of the International Maritime Organization’s 0.5% fuel sulphur cap when it becomes mandatory worldwide on 1 January 2020.
“CSA 2020 believes that exhaust gas cleaning systems will make a substantial difference to the ports and ocean environments in which their ships operate and will promote global environmental progress – especially the goal of reducing the health impact from airborne sources, which is at the heart of the 2020 IMO regulation,” sad the alliance in a press release.
