Two new ships for Carnival

Carnival Corporation & plc has signed a memorandum of agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the construction of two new cruise ships.

One vessel, a 99,000 ton ship, capable of carrying 2,660 passengers, is commissioned for Holland America Line, while the other, a 135,000 ton ship with the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers, will become part of the Carnival Cruise Line brand. It is estimated the construction of both ships will cost a total of approximately $195,000 per lower berth, although the agreement is still subject to customary closing conditions.

The Holland America vessel will be launched in autumn 2015, five years after the debut of the last Holland America ship, Nieuw Amsterdam. The new Carnival Cruise ship will enter service in winter 2016, four years after the introduction of Carnival Breeze.

"Today's order continues the company's strategy of introducing two to three ships per year across the corporation's 10 brands. We have strategically timed the introduction of these new ships to allow ample time for those brands to further grow their passenger base and absorb the new capacity while minimising revenue yield dilution in the remainder of their existing fleets," said Micky Arison, chairman and CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc.

The new order continues Carnival Corporation & plc’s longstanding relationship with Fincantieri and increases the number of ships the corporation currently has scheduled for delivery between 2013 and 2016. A total of nine ships is now on order, with two scheduled for delivery in 2013, two in 2014, three in 2015 and two in 2016.

Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, said, "These additional orders bring the total number of ships we have built for Carnival Corporation & plc to 61 and confirm Fincantieri's world leadership in the cruise ship sector even at a time of slowing demand."
